IRIS AWARD Winner

  19 September 2006

Darkan photographer Caroline Telfer has been has been announced as the winner of a major Western Australian Photography Competition.

The Perth Centre for Photography opened their IRIS AWARD on 13 September, and announced the winner from 35 finalists which were selected to hang in the Photography Gallery in Northbridge. The IRIS AWARD recognises unique and outstanding portraiture in a photo-based medium. The IRIS AWARD pushes the boundaries of contemporary photography and stimulates debate about the very meaning of the term portraiture.

The director of the Gallery said:
The response to this year's IRIS AWARD has literally been overwhelming and PCP would like to thank everyone for their entries. The selection panel had a very difficult time in choosing the finalists due to the high standard of the entries so this years exhibition looks set to be a fantastic one!"

Caroline's photograph titled Mothers' Room was taken in the mothers' room at Collie Central Shopping Centre and is one of a series of self portraits she has made in public facilities. The photograph uses a mirror reflection to create eye contact between the baby on the change table (Hugh, then six weeks old) and the mother (Caroline herself).
